Eyewitnesses reported that a baby was shot at point blank range and some of the victims were children as a single masked gunman went on a rampage. He was quickly arrested.

denverpost.com Jacob Stevens, 18, saw a guy walk into the theatre wearing body armor and throw some sort of cannister that then emitted some sort of gas. "You let your kids go to a late night movie . . . you never think something like this would happen," his mother Tammi said.

wsj.com Witness Paul Otermat, who was with his girlfriend, told Sky news: ''On the front right there was an emergency exit. A man walked through there, I only saw one shooter myself, he came in. He was wearing a black jacket and some sort of gas mask. I sort of thought it was some publicity stunt for a second there and then he threw a tear gas [canister] over the crowd. As soon as he let go of it I could feel it my eyes and I could tell that something was really wrong. And then he started firing shots into the crowd.''

reuters Rebels seized control of sections of Syria's international borders and torched the main police headquarters in the heart of old Damascus, advancing relenlessly after the assassination of Bashar al-Assad's closest lieutenants. PHUKET: A daily wrap of Thailand news, with a Phuket perspective, plus relevant reports from national and international media.

telegraph.co.uk Up to 5500 British immigration officials will strike next Thursday in a dispute about job cuts and pay, disrupting nearly 130,000 passengers as they arrive the day before the Olympic opening ceremony.

ft.com Concerns over the spread of the hand, foot and mouth disease virus among young children in Thailand and Cambodia were fuelled on Thursday when Thailand suspended some primary and secondary school classes after closing more than 100 elementary schools, 22 of them in Bangkok.

AP Cambodia is closing all kindergarten and primary schools two weeks before a regular vacation to try to stop the spread of a virus that has killed almost 60 Cambodian children.

Phuket Update Some classes have been suspended at two Phuket schools to try to halt the outbreak, Phuket Public Health officials said yesterday, adding that all Phuket schools were still open.

bbc.co.uk For most children, the virus causes nothing more than a few days' discomfort. Good hygiene prevents the virus from spreading, health experts say. A WHO spokesman told the BBC that it did not recommend the school closures as ''it could create unnecessary panic''.

bangkokpost.com Australia's top spy Nick Warner warned there was now "a web of links between extremists from Australia to Indonesia, to the southern Philippines, to the FATA region (tribal districts) in Pakistan, and to Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula in Yemen, and on to Somalia".

wsj.com Fugitive former Thai leader Thaksin Shinawatra said in an appearance in Jakarta that his sister Yingluck Shinawatra was doing a better job as prime minister than he did.

nationmultimedia.com The hotel business in Phuket is booming as tourists flood the island, but sales of resort properties have failed to benefit, according to CBRE Research's 'Phuket Property Report'. "Despite healthy increases in tourism arrivals, CB Richard Ellis is not, for now, seeing a proportional increase in sales in the resort property market. The rising tourism numbers are mainly from Asia, whose tourists have yet to become resort-property buyers," David Simister, chairman of CBRE Thailand, said.

irrawaddy.org The London School of Economics hosted a panel discussion evening to debate the crisis in western Arakan State and to express support for the Rohingya community.Chris Lewa, the director of the Arakan Project, said: ''What started as communal violence between Rakhine and Rohingya has now turned into state-sponsored violence targeting the Rohingya. Official policies of discrimination and denial of citizenship to the Rohingya create an environment in which ethnic clashes are virtually inevitable.''
Lewa also criticised the Burmese government's figures, which said only 80 people have died and 55,000 have been internally displaced. She said that in reality hundreds have died, many more have been injured, thousands of properties have been destroyed and an estimated 100,000 people have been displaced.

nation.com.pk The latest pogrom of violence and ethnic cleansing against the minority group has crossed even traditional bounds of cruelty. The tragic attitude of simply looking the other way must immediately change if human rights matter in the least.

stuff.co.nz Troubled British rocker Pete Doherty was asked to cut short his one-month stay at high-end drug rehabilitation centre The Cabin near Chiang Mai because he would not forswear his desire for drugs, an official said.

pa Doherty has visited Thailand before, taking a beach holiday in Phuket during the 2006-2007 New Year's holiday with his then-girlfriend, model Kate Moss.

guardian.co.uk Per capita carbon emissions in China increased by 9 percent in 2011 to reach 7.2 tonnes per person, only a fraction lower than the EU average of 7.5 tonnes. The figure for the US is still much higher - at 17.3 tonnes.

bbc.co.uk The number of murders and killings in England and Wales has fallen to the lowest level in nearly 30 years, Office for National Statistics figures show. Police recorded 550 homicides in 2011-12, 88 fewer than the previous year and the lowest number since 1983.

thejakartapost.com Singapore has been named as a key laundering point for tens of thousands of illegally caught birds from the Solomon Islands, one of the world's major wildlife exporters. A report released by international wildlife trade monitoring group Traffic pointed to Singapore as the single largest importer of birds from the islands, accounting for 72 percent.

reuters Olympic champion Rafa Nadal's withdrawal from the London Games because of injury deprived the tournament of one of its biggest attractions and left Spain reeling. The gold medal winner in Beijing four years ago has failed to recover from a knee problem.

smh.com.au A masterful, and unexpectedly leisurely, opening round of six under 64 had Australian Adam Scott leading the British Open, and well poised to challenge for a first major title. Only a bogey on the final hole left any cause for regret.

gravatar Is it true that 15 y.o. is the legal age someone can obtain a motorcycle license in Thailand? I was told this was the case when I recently visited Korat. Or does it vary from region to region?

Posted by Logic on July 7, 2012 18:21

gravatar 15, 16, 17yo can drive motorbike up to 110cc regardless of province. Must be 18 to drive a car.
We get a lot of accidents here because there is no public transport system. Everyone must drive a motorbike.

Unlucky, many of the youngsters don't have a license, at all. Also a lot of scooters are 115 or 125 or 135cc. So 18 will be the legal age, with a license.
But as long no one checks on this, ....!

Yeah, because in other provinces, places with quite a lot of choices when it comes to public transportation, there are almost no accidents with motorbikes. And almost no teenagers driving motorbikes to be seen..Yup, it's a unique Phuket phenomenon...NOT!
